Tomorrow I’m having a consultation with a psychiatrist about my signs of depression, and I might be prescribed some medications. I’m scared they might harm me even worse, although nothing’s clear yet. How do I calm down?

This is why you are seeing a psychiatrist. They can answer your questions about possible side effects, monitor your reactions, and help guide you to the right medication, if you find yourself on a medication that doesn’t work for you.

Know that the psychiatrist is making recommendations to you, but it’s ultimately your decision whether you want to follow them.

Psychiatrists are not all equal. It’s important that you find one that you trust and feel comfortable with. If you see a psychiatrist who you do not trust, feel is pushy, or doesn’t acknowledge your thoughts and feelings, I’d recommend you find another one who is a better fit for you.

Plenty of patients go to psychiatrists once and don’t return or follow their recommendations, so know that this is always an option. They are there to serve you. It’s all about your health and what works best for you.
